'Vas' means 'to dwell' or 'to occupy'. Vasthu means 'dwelling place.' Vasthu Shastra is the set of guidelines prescribed by the Rishis, so called learned men of ancient India for planning and constructing our dwelling places which range from our homes, cities, states, countries and eventually extend to our planet and the universe! Rules of Vasthushastra are wrapped around the concepts regarding the eight directions of the world. The eight primary directions represent eight elements in life. Therefore, facilitating the flow of these energies is important for the life of those who dwell in that place. Whatever be the spot you choose to build your home, these elements are always present and will influence everything around d the dwelling place. Read More
A home is not home without the people dwelling happily in it with peace. In this modern era, we find ourselves in stress every minute of our life. If our home hosts a negative energy or an obstacle for the proper energy flow in all directions, we may find it detrimental to the wellbeing of all who stay in our home. Implementing the rules of vasthusasthram ensures the optimization of energies in all directions, making your home a perfect place to live in. Read More
The five major elements considered in vasthushastram are Water, Air, Fire, Earth and space, popularly known in Indian sciences as Panchabhootas. Each direction is dominated by one of these elements. It is the balance of these elements that determine the energy flow in dwelling, and the factor that differentiate a home from good and bad. Read More
There is no document that states the origin of this science, but you can find numerous references about Vasthushastra in the ancient scriptures and epics of ancient India. Matsya purana speaks about eighteen originators of Vasthu, including Bramha, Vishwakarma, Vasishta, Maya, Narada etc. In around 3000BC, town planning was given paramount importance, as you can see from the remains of Indus valley civilization. For thousands of years Vasthushastra has been followed throughout India regarding construction, land purchase and town planning. Read More

"Vasthusasthram is a fundamental law of nature and is nothing but the alignment of the five elements of nature i.e. Fire, Water, Air, Earth and Sky which encourages better wellbeing and mental harmony". are the expressions of Prabhakaramenon Pariyadath , a civil-engineer turned Vasthu consultant who has been a worldwide pioneer in the field of Vasthusasthram for the past 50 years.
Mr Prabhakaramenon started designing and building homes in Kerala and Tamil Nadu since 1968. Until the early 70s, his residential designs were carried out without following the fundamentals of Vasthusasthram. Eventually he found clients approaching Vasthu consultants with his designs, who would redesign them accordingly. This provoked him to investigate this ancient philosophy and enlighten himself with it.
He became involved in the construction of Thali temple in Angadippuram and
the Neeranjali hall in Trichur by Chinmaya Mission as per the instruction of the
late Sri.K.K.N Nambiar, Chief Engineer, PWD. He also undertook some work
for Swami Chinmayananda between 1972 and 1980 during which he had the
opportunity to learn the principles of Vasthu from various experts including
Pundits, Acharyas and Priests across India. Throughout these ventures, he came
to the realization that Vasthusasthram is based on scientific principles like
magnetic power of the earth and the alignment of the sun, wind, water, sky and
fire and was anything but an unquestioning conviction.
For the past 50 years, Mr Prabhakaramenon has consulted more than 9000 designs including houses, residential colonies, apartments and commercial complexes throughout the world including USA, UK and Gulf countries. He has likewise been directly involved in the construction of several buildings including the architectural and structural aspects of the same. The Menachery Towers designed by Prabhakaramenon (architecture, structure, supervision) is the first 10 storeyed apartment of Trichur and is more than 25 years old, with a capacity of 50000 litres water tank over rooftop and 50000 litres reserve in the ground. There is additionally a double outer wall with 45cm gap air space to shield the building from unpredictable climate. This has subsequently become one of the most studied buildings by architectural understudies for their case studies. The construction of the building was completed in record time and pile foundation was deemed not necessary. In addition to that, a standby pumpset and generator was provided for use in the improbable event of the existing one facing any difficulties
The Dheshabhimani Building, Trichur was constructed 25 years ago with Mr Prabhakaramenon’s able supervision as per the request of the management. It was completed in record time very economically where the pile foundation was again deemed not necessary due to the extraordinary structural design to save cost of construction.
Over the past 50 years of practice in the field, and continuous research in
Vasthusasthram, Mr Prabhakaramenon has been able to debunk a number of
myths regarding the same:
1. Popular belief is that perimeter calculations of rooms and outer area of buildings is the fundamental of Vasthu. This is not so. Many buildings which were constructed by traditional Vasthu experts seem to have various energy problems which Mr Prabhakaramenon has corrected.
2. It has been noticed that in some parts of India that houses are constructed based on the star of the owner. This is a false notion.
3. Another popular yet misleading belief is to construct the house facing East and the main steps towards East or North. Even from ancient times, people were not willing to construct houses facing south. Over the last 50 years of work, Mr Prabhakaramenon has proved that south facing is equally good and proved this notion wrong. He has also published articles based on this between 1990-2000 in leading magazines.
4. People believe that the number of steps and the fitting of the toilet has an impact. This is also a false notion. It is completely acceptable to provide as many steps as desired. This is also applicable in the case of the toilet fixture.
5. A handful of people believe that Vasthu is not applicable for small plots. This is explained by a simple example. In the human body, the position of even the small organs like eyes and nose makes a huge difference. Similarly, Vasthu is important for all plots alike be it big or small. In the end, what is important is the position, not the measurement.
In conclusion, houses may be constructed facing east, west, south or north as per the plot. Number of steps may be odd or even. Measurements of rooms may be given as per proprieter's choice (in proportion) according to the utility. Fittings of closets, basins and showers in toilet may be provided as per utility. Over the years, modern Vasthusasthram has had a great impact on the development of structures and the people have started considering it diligently while they start new ventures in their plots.
